30 Minute Honey Butter Rolls
30 Minute Honey Butter Rolls are soft, slightly sweet yeast rolls made with melted butter, milk, honey, egg, and all-purpose flour. The dough is mixed and lightly kneaded to a sticky consistency, shaped into rolls, and allowed a short rise before baking until golden. Brushing warm rolls with melted butter enhances their rich, sweet flavor and tender crumb. These rolls work well as a quick bread option for dinners or snacks.
Ingredients
- 1/3 cup butter
- 1 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons instant yeast
- 1/3 cup honey
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 egg large
- 3 ½ – 4 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons butter melted
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400 F. Lightly grease a quarter sheet pan or a 9x13-inch rimmed cookie sheet.
- In a small saucepan, melt butter.
- When butter is mostly melted, stir in milk, and heat mixture to 100-110 F.
- Meanwhile, add yeast and honey to the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment (or a large mixing bowl if mixing by hand).
- When milk mixture is at temperature, add to yeast and honey; stir to combine.
- Add salt and egg, and stir until combined.
- Stir in 2 cups all-purpose flour.
- Add remaining flour 1/4 cup at a time until dough clings to paddle and cleans the sides of the bowl. Dough will still be pretty sticky.
- With floured hands, shape dough into 12 rolls, and place dough on prepared baking sheet.
- Cover, and let dough rest for 10 minutes in a warm spot.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until lightly golden brown.
- When rolls are done baking, brush with 2 tablespoons melted butter.
Notes
- If substituting active dry yeast for instant yeast, let the yeast and honey mixture foam before proceeding to ensure yeast activity.
- Use milk warmed to approximately 100-110°F; too hot can kill yeast, too cool may slow rising.
- Adjust salt if using unsalted butter by increasing it slightly in the dough.
- Keep dough sticky but manageable to avoid dense rolls; add flour gradually to reach desired consistency.
- For a stronger honey flavor, brush additional honey butter on rolls after baking.
- Use a warm spot for the short rise, such as a briefly heated oven turned off, to promote proper dough rising.
