Aguapanela

Aguapanela or agua de panela, is a popular drink in South and Central America and the Caribbean obtained by diluting panela.

Ingredients

  • 6 oz. panela
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 stick cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger
  • Juice of a lemon , optional
Garnish
  • 4 sticks of cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Combine the panela and water in a saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Stir until the panela is completely dissolved.
  3. Add the cinnamon stick and grated ginger. Mix well for 15 seconds using a whisk.
  4. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes over low heat.
  5. Remove the pan from the heat and let it cool.
  6. Add the lemon juice (optional).
  7. Using a fine mesh strainer, filter the liquid to remove all impurities.
  8. Pour the aguapanela into a cup or glass.
  9. Serve hot or cold, and garnish with a cinnamon stick.
