Apple and Mincemeat Crumble

Apple and Mincemeat Crumble, a fantastic festive dessert made with only 5 ingredients: butter, flour and oats for the topping, and apples and leftover mincemeat for the filling. The easiest Christmas dessert to whip up, and a big favourite with the whole family.

Ingredients

  • 4 apples
  • 6 tablespoon mincemeat
  • 150 g butter
  • 150 g flour
  • 50 g oats
  • optional - 50 g sugar ( I find that the filling is sweet enough, and did not add any sugar to my topping, but granulated sugar can be used if wished to)

Instructions

    Cup of Yum
  1. Butter an ovenproof dish.
  2. Peel, core and chop the apples, and add them to the dish together with the mincemeat.
  3. Mix well to get the apples fully coated in the mincemeat.
  4. Melt the butter and allow it to cool slightly.
  5. In a bowl, add the flour, oats, melted butter and sugar if used.
  6. Mix to get a lumpy mixture.
  7. Top the apple and mincemeat with the flour topping, and bake at 190 degrees Celsius (375 Fahrenheit) for 35 minutes until golden and the filling is bubbling hot.

  • I find that melting the butter helps massively with a much better crumble topping. My way to go used to be rubbing the cold butter with the flour to make breadcrumbs, but I find that you get a deeper shade of golden and a much crumbly texture when the butter is melted.
  • Plus, it also slightly reduces the baking time - I used to have to bake the crumble for ages, whereas now it's ready in 35 minutes maximum.
