Apple Betty

Ingredients

  • 5 Honeycrisp (or Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and sliced)
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice , freshly squeezed
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour , sifted
  • ⅓ cup brown sugar
  • ⅙ cup caster sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 pinch salt
  • ½ cup cold butter , cut into small cubes
  • 2 tablespoons butter , softened (for the mold)

  • Square baking dish , 9-inch / 22 cm
  • Stand mixer

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F (175°C).
  2. Butter a 9-inch (22 cm) square baking dish.
  3. In a bowl, combine the apples and lemon juice and place them at the bottom of the baking dish.
  4. In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the flour, brown sugar, caster sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, ground cloves and salt.
  5. Using the flat beater, pulse twice to combine all the ingredients.
  6. Add the butter, a few cubes at a time, turning the stand mixer on between each addition of butter or until the butter is completely incorporated and the mixture turns into a kind of coarse breadcrumbs.
  7. Crumble this mixture over the apples.
  8. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until the surface is lightly browned.
  9. Serve hot with whipped cream.
