Apple Bread

You can make wonderful apple bread with fresh apples, cinnamon, and pie spices.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves ground
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2/3 cup dark brown sugar firmly packed
  • 2 egg
  • 1 cup apple about 2 medium apples, coarsely grated, raw
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup walnuts chopped
  • Grease for the pan (shortening)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9x5x3-inch loaf pan with shortening.
  2. In a mixing bowl, sift together the flour, salt, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Set aside.
  3. In a separate mixing bowl, combine the shortening, sugar, and eggs. Beat well with an electric mixer.
  4. Stir in the apples and about half of the sifted dry ingredients.
  5. Add the buttermilk and stir with a spoon until incorporated.
  6. Add the rest of the flour mixture and stir just until well mixed.
  7. Fold in the walnuts.
  8. Pour the batter into a greased 9x5x3-inch loaf pan and bake at 350 degrees for 55 to 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Remove the bread from the pan and let it cool on a rack.
