Apple Brown Betty

Ingredients

  • 4 baking apples
  • 4 slices white sandwich bread
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar packed and divided
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 3 tablespoons butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 F.
  2. Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples.
  3. Slice bread into a small dice, or tear into very small pieces.
  4. Coat a 7x11-inch baking dish with butter.
  5. Add 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1/2 of the apple slices, and 1/2 of the breadcrumbs to the dish.
  6. Sprinkle with cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg.
  7. Repeat the layers.
  8. Slice butter and lay slices all over the top of the breadcrumbs.
  9. Sprinkle dish with remaining 1/4 cup brown sugar.
  10. Bake, covered in foil, until done – about 30-40 minutes.
  11. Carefully remove foil in last few minutes of baking to brown the top.

Notes

  • Apples: If you use Granny Smith apples, you may want to increase the sugar by 1/4 cup if you like desserts on the sweeter side.
