Avena Dominicana [Recipe + Video] Dominican Oatmeal Breakfast

A mixture of lovely spices, and a touch of sweetness make desayuno de avena dominicana (Dominican oatmeal) the perfect oatmeal breakfast.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups instant oats (not instant)
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder
  • ¼ teaspoon clove powder
  • 2 cup milk (whole or skim) (use a substitute if you wish)
  • 2 tablespoons salted butter optional
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg (freshly-grated)
  • 1 banana sliced

Instructions

1. Combine

  1. In a medium pot or saucepan, combine oatmeal, salt, sugar, cinnamon, cloves, 2 cups of water, and milk.
2. Cooking oats
  1. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat. Stir constantly, reducing the liquids until you obtain a soft porridge. Taste, and add more sugar to taste if you find it necessary. Stir in the butter to combine with the oatmeal mix.
3. Serving
  1. Remove from the heat. Serve the oatmeal in individual bowls, and sprinkle with nutmeg.Garnish with banana slices and serve.

Notes

  • Use soy or almond milk for a lactose-intolerant-friendly and vegan version.
