Barbecue Sauce Recipe

Thick and rich, traditional barbecue sauce recipe with an amazing deep and sweet flavor. Molasses and dark brown sugar, plus 10 spices make this a mouth-watering sauce for meat.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup chili sauce
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 8 ounces tomato sauce
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 1 1/4 cups dark brown sugar
  • 1 1/4 cups red wine vinegar
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 2 teaspoons hickory-flavored liquid smoke
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground mustard
  • 1 1/4 tablespoons ancho chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon celery seed
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan over medium heat, mix together all of the ingredients. 
  2. Once the mixture heats through, reduce the heat to low and simmer for 20-30 minutes.
  3. If you'd like a thicker sauce, simmer uncovered for longer, up to 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
  4. Use the barbecue sauce as a dipping sauce, serve over pulled pork or brush on meat in the last 10 minutes of grilling.
  5. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. This also freezes well.
