Ingredients

  • 1 package tempeh diced
  • 2 cups barbecue sauce
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • ½ small red onion diced
  • ¼ teaspoon liquid smoke of
  • 4 Buns
  • Your favorite burger toppings

Instructions

  1. Cook garlic and onion in a nonstick or lightly oiled pan for 5 minutes.
  2. Add tempeh and liquid smoke, continue to cook for another 5 minutes.
  3. Add BBQ sauce until the tempeh is submerged. Cook for 5 more minutes or until sauce is caramelized.
  4. Serve tempeh mix on a bun and top with your favorite burger toppings.

Notes

  • If using smoked barbecue sauce, omit the liquid smoke to avoid excessive smokiness.
  • Tempeh patties can be grilled in a foil packet for a backyard BBQ variation instead of pan cooking.
  • Add chili powder, cayenne, or red flakes to increase spice if desired.
  • Use gluten-free buns to make the sandwich gluten-free.
