Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour (see note 1)
  • 1 tablespoon plus 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (see note 2)
  • 1 (12-ounce) bottle beer unopened and at room temperature (see note 3)
  • 3 tablespoons butter melted

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease a 9-inch by 5-inch loaf pan with butter. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and sugar. Open the beer and add to the mixture all at once (it will foam up).
  2. Stir 20 to 30 seconds until just combined and the batter is slightly lumpy (do not overmix). Pour batter into prepared loaf pan. Drizzle with melted butter.
  3. Place loaf into oven and bake until top is crusty and a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean, about 40 to 45 minutes.
  4. Remove from oven and allow to rest in the pan for 5 minutes. Turn the loaf out of the pan onto a cooling rack. Serve in thick slices warm or at room temperature, with butter.

Notes

  • Use lighter beers like lager or ale for a milder taste, or darker stouts to deepen flavor and color.
  • Adjust sugar from 3/4 cup down to 2 tablespoons for less sweetness.
  • Substitute self-rising flour for all-purpose, omitting baking powder and salt accordingly.
  • Store wrapped bread at room temperature for up to 4 days to maintain freshness.
