Ingredients
- ⅓ cup unsalted butter room temperature
- ¾ cup light brown sugar packed
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg room temperature
- 1 ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup buttermilk room temperature
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ¾ teaspoon salt
Glaze
- ¼ cup unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar packed
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons buttermilk
- 1 ⅓ cups powdered sugar
- 1 pinch salt
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray a 9-inch cake pan (with 2-inch high sides) with pan spray and line it with a round of parchment paper for easy removal.
- In a large bowl, combine ⅓ cup unsalted butter, ¾ cup light brown sugar, ¼ cup granulated sugar, 1 large egg, and 1 ½ teaspoon vanilla extract until combined. Mix in 1 cup buttermilk.
- In a small bowl, whisk together 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking soda, and ¾ teaspoon salt. Add to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined.
- Add the cake batter to the prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean from the center of the cake.
- Let the cake cool for 15 minutes before poking all over with a skewer and pouring the glaze evenly over the top. You can place a pan or parchment paper under the cooling rack to catch the excess glaze as it spills over the sides of the cake.

Glaze
- Once the cake has been removed from the oven and is cooling, begin making the glaze. Add ¼ cup unsalted butter to a small saucepan and cook over medium heat until fully melted.
- Reduce the heat to low and add 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar, ½ teaspoon vanilla extract, and 2 tablespoons buttermilk. Stir until the sugar is completely melted. Remove from the heat and stir in 1 ⅓ cups powdered sugar and 1 pinch salt.
