Caramelized Onion and Apple Waffles
These caramelized onion and apple waffles make a soft on the inside and crisp on the outside waffle that's slightly sweet from the caramelized onions and grated apple. You can, of course, serve these smothered in maple syrup. But they're a great twist as a "bread" for sandwiches or to dip into a hearty fall soup or stew.
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons butter 1.5 ounces or 43 grams, unsalted
- 1½ cups all-purpose flour 6.6 ounces or 188 grams
- ¼ cup granulated sugar 1.8 ounces or 50 grams
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ⅛ teaspoon salt
- 1½ cups milk
- 2 egg large
- 1 apple peeled, cored, and grated (about 1 cup)
- ¼ cup cheddar cheese grated
- ¼ cup onion see notes, caramelized
Instructions
- Plug in your waffle iron to heat it up.
- Melt the butter in a small pan over low heat and let cool slightly as you prepare the rest of the waffle ingredients.
- Whisk the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt together in a large bowl.
- In a small bowl, or in the measuring cup used to measure your milk, whisk together the milk and eggs until they are well blended.
- Add the milk and egg mixture and the butter to the bowl with the dry ingredients and stir only until just combined. A few lumps are fine.
- Add the apple, cheese, and onion and stir to mix, making sure to break up any clumps.
- Make the apple waffles according to your waffle maker's instructions.
Notes
- If you are making caramelized onions for these apple waffles, please see the blog post for instructions. Doing so will add about 1 hour to the cook time of this recipe.
- This recipe will make six generous half-cup waffles.
- If you want to serve these all at once, keep waffles warm on a cookie sheet in a 200 degree Fahrenheit oven.
