  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cumin seeds (Jeera)
  • 1/2 teaspoon fennel seeds (saunf)
  • 1 teaspoon ginger finely chopped
  • 1 green chili pepper finely diced, optional
  • 1 pinch asafoetida (hing) optional, skip for gluten-free
  • 1/4 cup green peas
  • 3/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon Coriander powder (dhaniya powder)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon dry mango powder (Amchur)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Kashmiri red chili powder adjust to taste
To serve
  • tamarind chutney
  • mint cilantro chutney

Instructions

Make the potato stuffing
    Cup of Yum
  1. Peel the skin and mash the potatoes. Set aside for later.
  2. Heat oil in a pan on medium heat. Add cumin seeds and fennel seeds. Once the seeds start to sizzle, add ginger, green chili and hing. Cook for about 30 seconds.
  3. Add the boiled & mashed potatoes, green peas, salt, coriander powder, garam masala, dry mango powder and red chili powder. Mix everything well together and let it cook for 1-2 minutes on low heat.
  4. Remove pan from heat and let the filling cool down a bit.
Assemble the Jalapeno Poppers
  1. Slice the jalapenos in half vertically to create 2 halves per jalapeno. Remove the seeds and the inside of the jalapeno. No need to remove the stem (leave it out when enjoying the poppers). Make sure to use gloves or wash hands right after handling the jalapenos.
  2. Stuff each of the jalapenos with the samosa stuffing mixture.
  3. Press some grated cheese on top of the samosa filling.
Air Fryer Method
  1. Load the poppers into the air fryer. Spray the poppers with cooking oil (this is optional). Close the air fryer.
  2. Cook the poppers on 370F for 7-8 minutes. Remove from the air fryer and let them cool a bit before serving.
  3. Drizzle some tamarind and mint cilantro chutney before serving.
Oven Method
  1. Place the stuffed jalapeños on a baking sheet keeping space between each. Bake at 400°F for 10-12 minutes.

Notes

  • Boiling potatoes for this recipe: I love to use my Instant Pot to boil potatoes. You can boil them on the stovetop in a pot or in a stovetop pressure cooker.
  • Filling variation ideas: You can also do a paneer or tofu scramble filling for these poppers. Here is the paneer puff pastry recipe, where you can find the recipe for the paneer filling.
  • Halloween variation: Use candy eyeballs and place 2 of them on each jalapeno. To keep the eyeballs still on the jalapeno, you can put a drop of chutney and place the eyeballs on it. Then, make a funny nose with a small drop of tamarind chutney. Enjoy!
