Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire Recipe

If you are familiar with the Christmas song “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire”, then try making this special treat at home this year! Roasted Chestnuts are a great holiday appetizer and a healthy snack that’s sweet with a nutty flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound fresh chestnuts in the shell (make sure to use the edible variety)
  • optional seasoning

Instructions

  1. Start a fireplace, campfire or open fire pit. You’ll need to move things around so that there is a bed of coals that the pan can rest on.
  2. Rinse off the dirt from chestnuts and cut through the shell on the rounded side to score an "X".
  3. Add scored chestnuts to the roasting pan in a single layer.
  4. Place the pan on the coal for about 15-20 minutes, stirring from time to time.
  5. Remove them from the pan and keep warm in a tea towel for 5-10 minutes before peeling.
  6. Peel the roasted chesnuts and serve immedietely.

Notes

  • You can add seasonings to your chestnuts if you wish. Some good options include honey, salt, and melted butter.
