Chocolate Buttercream Frosting Recipe

This Chocolate Buttercream Frosting combines softened butter and cocoa powder beaten to lightness, then mixed with powdered sugar, milk, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. The result is a fluffy, creamy frosting ideal for piping onto cooled cupcakes or cakes.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup butter softened
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • 1½ cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk or half and half
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • salt pinch

Instructions

  1. Beat together the butter and cocoa powder until light and fluffy.
  2. Add the powdered sugar, milk, vanilla, and salt. Mix until well blended, adding additional milk if needed to bring the frosting together.
  3. Continue to beat for 3-5 minutes, until light and fluffy.
  4. Pipe the buttercream onto the cooled cupcakes.

Notes

  • Store frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Before using refrigerated frosting, bring to room temperature and remix to regain spreadable texture.
  • For long-term storage, freeze frosting in a sealed container for up to 3 months, thaw in fridge, then return to room temperature and remix before use.
