Chocolate Buttercream Frosting Recipe
This Chocolate Buttercream Frosting combines softened butter and cocoa powder beaten to lightness, then mixed with powdered sugar, milk, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. The result is a fluffy, creamy frosting ideal for piping onto cooled cupcakes or cakes.
Ingredients
- ½ cup butter softened
- ¼ cup cocoa powder
- 1½ cups powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk or half and half
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- salt pinch
Instructions
- Beat together the butter and cocoa powder until light and fluffy.
- Add the powdered sugar, milk, vanilla, and salt. Mix until well blended, adding additional milk if needed to bring the frosting together.
- Continue to beat for 3-5 minutes, until light and fluffy.
- Pipe the buttercream onto the cooled cupcakes.
Notes
- Store frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Before using refrigerated frosting, bring to room temperature and remix to regain spreadable texture.
- For long-term storage, freeze frosting in a sealed container for up to 3 months, thaw in fridge, then return to room temperature and remix before use.
