Churro Funnel Cakes
Crispy funnel cake meets churro goodness complete with a dusting of cinnamon sugar, whipped cream, and caramel drizzle.
Ingredients
- 4 cups vegetable oil for frying
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 3 large egg
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 2 cups Whipped Cream
- 1/2 cup caramel sauce
Instructions
- In a large, heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer, heat 4 cups vegetable oil to between 350°F and 375°F (175°C and 190°C). Use a thermometer to monitor the temperature.
- In a large saucepan, combine 1 cup water, 1/2 cup butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Heat over medium heat until the butter is completely melted and the mixture just begins to simmer.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat. Add 1 cup all-purpose flour all at once and stir vigorously with a wooden spoon until the mixture forms a smooth dough. Add the eggs one at a time, stirring well after each addition until fully incorporated and the dough is smooth.
- Transfer the dough to a large pastry bag fitted with a large star-shaped tip. Pipe the dough directly into the hot oil in a spiral motion, creating a funnel cake shape. Pinch off the dough once the desired size is reached.
- Fry the funnel cakes until they puff up and turn golden brown, about 2 to 4 minutes, turning halfway through to ensure even cooking on both sides. Carefully remove the funnel cakes from the oil using tongs or a slotted spoon, and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain for 30 to 60 seconds.
- In a shallow dish, combine 1 cup granulated sugar and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon. While the funnel cakes are still warm, dip them into the cinnamon sugar mixture, coating both sides evenly. Shake off any excess sugar.
- Serve the funnel cakes immediately. Top each one with a generous dollop of whipped cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce
