Cornbread Dressing Recipe
Cornbread Dressing is a savory side made by combining dried cornbread and white bread with cooked onions, celery, and herbs, moistened with chicken broth and eggs, then baked until set. The mixture yields a moist, flavorful dressing with traditional poultry seasoning and sage making it an ideal accompaniment to poultry dishes.
Ingredients
- ½ cup butter
- 1 onion diced
- 1 cup celery chopped
- 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning
- ½ teaspoon sage ground
- 5 cups cornbread dry* see note, crumbled
- 5 cups white bread see note, dry, cut into cubes
- 2 tablespoons parsley chopped, fresh
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
- 2 to 3 cups chicken broth or as needed
- 3 egg beaten
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Melt butter in a large skillet. Add onion, celery, poultry seasoning, and sage. Cook over medium heat until tender (do not brown). Cool.
- Place cornbread and bread in a large bowl with celery & onion mixture, parsley, and salt & pepper.
- Combine eggs and 2 cups chicken broth, whisking until smooth.
- Drizzle bread cubes with egg mixture, gently tossing just until moistened. Add more broth if needed to moisten the mixture, allowing the mixture to stand a few minutes between each addition to soak up the moisture.
- Place in a greased 2qt baking dish. Bake uncovered for 35-40 minutes or until heated through.
Notes
- Dry bread by leaving out or baking at 325°F for 10 minutes; use completely cooled bread cubes for best texture.
- Cooked sausage can be mixed in to add flavor and protein.
- Use pasteurized eggs if stuffing into turkey to ensure food safety.
- Stuff turkey loosely and ensure the dressing reaches 165°F internally; extra dressing can be baked outside the bird.
