Creamy Tomato Sausage Penne

Creamy Tomato Sausage Penne is the most perfect, quick, easy, wonderfully tasty pasta dish. Full of flavorful Italian sausage, penne, and a creamy marinara sauce, and so quick to pull together!

Ingredients

  • 3 cups (12 ounces) penne noodles cooked according to package directions
  • 1 pound ground Italian sausage hot or mild
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 24 ounces marinara sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Italian blend herb seasoning or Herbs de Provence
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 - 1 ½ teaspoons salt to taste
  • cracked black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Drizzle oil into a skillet over medium-high heat. Add sausage and brown for 5-8 minutes, breaking apart into small pieces as it cooks.
  2. Stir in marinara sauce, garlic powder, Italian seasoning and simmer for 2-3 minutes.
  3. Stir in heavy cream. Stir in cooked penne. Add salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Stir in cooked penne. Add salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Garnish with fresh herbs like basil or thyme if desired and serve.

Notes

  • Heavy cream swap: easily sub out the heavy cream for a fat free half and half or other milk. Thicken it up with a simple corn starch slurry of 1/4 cup water + 1 T corn starch whisked til dissolved. Stir into bubbling pasta sauce til thickened. 
  • Expert tip: stir in 1 cup of fresh baby spinach!
  • Serving suggestion: garlic bread and tossed salad. 
  • Garnish it: top it off with fresh basil, grated parmesan cheese, and cracked black pepper.
