Currywurst

Currywurst is a traditional German dish of fried or boiled sausage, served with a tomato curry sauce and other spices.

Ingredients

  • 8 bratwurst , sausages
  • 1 large white onion , grated
  • 3 cloves garlic , minced
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon of paprika powder
  • 1 tablespoon curry powder
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 tablespoon tomato puree
  • ½ cup tomato coulis
  • 2 meat stock cubes (or vegetable stock cubes)
  • 3 tablespoons neutral vegetable oil
  • ¾ cup boiling water
  • ½ cup white vinegar
  • salt
  • pepper

  1. In a bowl, mix the tomato puree, honey and vinegar.
  2. Using a toothpick, prick the sausages several times all over.
  3. In a Dutch oven, heat the oil over medium heat and fry the sausages, turning them several times, until golden brown.
  4. Then remove the sausages from the pot and set them aside, keeping them warm.
  5. In the same Dutch oven, sauté the onion over medium/high heat, stirring very frequently. Sprinkle it with flour and add the stock cubes and garlic. Stir well and sauté over medium heat for a few seconds, stirring constantly.
  6. Add the tomato puree / honey and vinegar mixture and mix well.
  7. Sauté for 1 minute over medium/low heat, stirring constantly.
  8. Add ¾ cup of boiling water.
  9. Then add the tomato coulis and mix well.
  10. Add half the curry powder and all the spices, cover and simmer over low heat for 15 minutes.
  11. Cut the sausages into large chunks. Arrange them in a dish and pour the sauce over them.
  12. Sprinkle with the remaining curry powder.
  13. Serve with slices of toasted bread and French fries or Spätzle.
