Dutch Apple Pie
Dutch Apple Pie uses thinly sliced Granny Smith apples mixed with sugar, cinnamon, cardamom, flour, and optional raisins, baked in a single pie crust topped with a crumbly streusel made of flour, brown and white sugar, and cold butter. The pie bakes until the apples are tender and the crust golden.
Ingredients
- 1 Single Pie Crust
- 2 ½ pounds apple about 6 apples, Granny Smith variety
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- ¼ cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground cardamom
- ½ cup raisins optional
Topping
- ⅔ cup all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup brown sugar packed
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- ⅓ cup butter cold
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a deep-dish pie plate with pie crust.
- Peel and core apples. Slice into ⅛" slices. Toss apple slices with sugar, flour, spices, and raisins if using. Place apple slices in prepared pastry.
Topping
- Mix flour, brown sugar, and white sugar in a bowl. Add butter and combine using a pastry cutter to break down the large pieces of butter.
- Work ingredients with hands until large crumbs have formed. If the mixture is powdery it needs to be mixed longer.
- Sprinkle the crumbs over the apples.
- Bake 50-60 minutes or until apples are tender and crust is golden.
Notes
- Store leftover Dutch Apple Pie in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
- Add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice to the apple mixture to enhance flavor and prevent browning.
- Ensure butter is cold when preparing the streusel topping for proper crumb texture.
- If the topping appears too soft or powdery, mix longer until it holds together in large crumbs.
- Chopped toasted walnuts can be added to the topping for extra texture and flavor.
