Ingredients

  • 8 pear ripe
  • ½ cup water
  • 2 tablespoons sugar brown sugar or white
  • lemon juice of ½ lemon
  • 1 cinnamon stick optional
  • 5 cloves Optional

Instructions

  1. Place the sugar, water, lemon juice and cinnamon stick into a medium-sized pot over a medium heat and simmer, stirring occasionally until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Peel and core the pears and cut into quarters, and add them to the pot.
  3. Simmer for 10-15 minutes or until the fruit is soft and begins to break down. Remove and discard the cinnamon stick and cloves.
  4. Enjoy hot or cold. Delicious on yogurt, pancakes, waffles, ice cream, granola or cheesecake. Get creative with the tasty stewed pears.

Notes

  • Peeling the pears is optional as skins soften while cooking, but peeled pears offer a smoother texture.
  • Riper pears cook faster; watch closely to avoid over-softening and pear collapse.
  • For festive flavor, replace water with red or mulled wine during cooking.
  • Adding peeled chopped ginger or star anise can bring additional spice notes to the stewed pears.
