Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup onion chopped
  • 1 clove garlic chopped
  • 1 pound ground beef chuck
  • 1 pound tomato canned
  • 16 ounces tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon oregano
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 pound cottage cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 pound mozzarella cheese sliced
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan Cheese
  • 10 ounces lasagna noodles

Instructions

  1. Cook lasagna noodles according to package instructions.
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  3. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef with oil, onion, and garlic. Cook slowly. You want the garlic and onion to soften and for the flavor to bloom.
  4. Add the tomatoes, sauce, seasonings, and sugar, and simmer uncovered for 30 minutes.
  5. In a separate bowl, beat the egg and blend in thecottage cheese.
  6. In a greased 2-quart casserole layer 1/2 of the meat sauce, 3 noodles, 1/2 cottage cheese, 1/2 mozzarella cheese.
  7. Repeat layers and sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top.
  8. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes.

  • Make the meat sauce a day ahead and refrigerate overnight to let the herbs and spices infuse fully, enhancing flavor.
  • Use a 2-quart casserole dish to achieve the correct layering and baking depth as specified in the recipe.
