Easy Honey Bourbon Chicken

This is the best bourbon chicken recipe made with honey to create a sweet and delicious sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds chicken breasts skinless, boneless, or thighs
  • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil divided
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger grated fresh
  • 1/3 cup chicken broth reduced sodium
  • 1/3 cup soy sauce low sodium
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 3 tablespoons bourbon (or apple juice)
  • 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper or more to taste
  • rice for serving, cooked
  • green onion for serving, sliced

Instructions

  1. Cut the chicken into 1-inch pieces, then place them in a large bowl and toss with 2 tablespoons cornstarch until well coated.
  2. Heat the oil in a large skillet. Add the chicken, season with salt and pepper to taste, and cook for 5 to 6 minutes, until cooked through and golden brown. Transfer to a plate and set aside.
  3. Add the remaining tablespoon of cornstarch to a small bowl, then add the garlic, ginger, broth, soy sauce, honey, bourbon, vinegar, sesame oil and red pepper. Whisk well.
  4. Pour the sauce mixture into the skillet and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, until thickened.
  5. Return the chicken and juices to the skillet. Stir to coat and cook for 2 minutes, or until warmed through.
  6. Serve over rice and garnish with green onions.

Notes

  • SUBSTITUTIONS
  • STORAGE: Store leftovers in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat prior to serving. 
  • Nutritional Information includes using chicken breasts in this recipe. If you substitute for chicken thighs, the nutritional information will differ. Nutritional information does not include cooked rice or green onions. 
  • Bourbon: You can substitute the bourbon with apple juice or apple cider for a similar tangy sweet flavor. Do not use apple cider vinegar as it is not the same. 
  • Soy Sauce: Use coconut aminos or tamari instead.
