Ingredients

  • one (6 oz) tomato paste
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon granulated or powder garlic , to taste
  • ½ teaspoon granulated or powder onion
  • ½ teaspoon sugar
  • ½ to 1 teaspoon kosher salt , adjust to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 fresh garlic , thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice or red wine vinegar (optional)
  • A small handful fresh basil , chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a small saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add tomato paste and cook, stirring constantly for 1 to 2 minutes, until it browns slightly.
  3. Remove from heat and transfer the mixture to a small bowl.
  4. Add the remaining ingredients and mix well.
  5. Let the mixture rest for about 15 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.
