Ingredients
- 4 Tablespoons butter
- 2 1/2 cups onion (chopped, I prefer a sweet onion)
- 3/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 4 ounces cream cheese (softened to room temperature or placed in the microwave at 50% power for 10-15 seconds)
- 1/2 cup sour cream (preferably full-fat)
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
Instructions
- In a large skillet, heat butter over medium heat. Add onions and cook for 5 minutes, stirring often. Reduce heat to medium-low and continue to cook for 15-20 minutes. Watch carefully as you may need to turn the heat to the low setting. Stir often. The onions will begin to turn a golden brown color and become soft. Add onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper and stir together. Remove from heat and let cool.
- In a bowl, combine softened cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise. Fold in caramelized onions. Check for seasoning. The onion dip will become more flavorful as it chills in the refrigerator.
- Serve with crinkle potato chips, French bread, veggies, or crostini.
