Ingredients

  • 8 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 loaf French bread cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter cubed
  • maple syrup for serving
  • whipped cream for serving optional

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  2. Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish and evenly distribute the bread cubes in it. Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes, ensuring all are soaked.
  3. Cover the dish and refrigerate several hours or overnight to allow the bread to absorb the liquid.
  4. In a bowl, combine brown sugar and flour. Cut the cold butter cubes into the mixture with a pastry cutter and gently mix with your hands.
  5. Once the mixture is crumbly like streusel, stop mixing it. Refrigerate this topping overnight.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Uncover the baking dish. Top it with the brown sugar crumble mixture and bake for 50 minutes or until golden brown. Serve with maple syrup and whipped cream if desired.
