Ground Beef Cheesesteak

This Ground Beef Cheesesteak sandwich combines browned ground beef with butter-sautéed onions and green bell peppers, enriched by melted cream cheese and topped with provolone slices on toasted buns. The creamy sauce contrasts with the savory meat and softened vegetables, creating a hearty texture and flavor profile. This recipe is convenient for making multiple sandwiches with familiar cheesesteak elements while using ground beef instead of sliced steak for a quicker preparation.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef 80/20 or leaner
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 4 tablespoons butter salted
  • 1 medium yellow onion thinly sliced
  • 1 medium green bell pepper thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces cream cheese
  • 8 Hamburger Bun or hoagie buns
  • 8 lices provolone cheese or American cheese or cheese whiz

Instructions

    Cup of Yum
  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add in 2 pounds ground beef and season with 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon black pepper, and 1 teaspoon garlic powder. Cook, breaking the beef into small pieces, until it starts to brown, about 7–9 minutes.
  2. Push the cooked ground beef to the edges of the pan. Add 4 tablespoons salted butter to the center of the skillet, followed by the sliced onion and bell pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion and pepper are softened and slightly browned, about 5–6 minutes.
  3. Reduce the heat to medium-low. Cube 8 ounces cream cheese and add to the skillet. Fold the cream cheese into the beef mixture until fully melted and incorporated, creating a creamy sauce.
  4. Turn off the heat. Spoon the beef mixture onto the buns, about 1/2 cup per sandwich, and top each with a slice of Provolone cheese. Serve immediately.
  5. For best results, toast the buns before assembling.

Notes

  • Additional toppings like sautéed mushrooms or pickled jalapeño slices can vary the sandwich's flavor.
  • Toast buns by placing them cut-side down in a dry skillet for 1-2 minutes or under a broiler to add crunch and prevent sogginess.
  • If preferred, dice onions and bell peppers instead of slicing for a different texture; cook until softened.
