Gyudon

Simple but delicious, this Gyudon recipe features thinly sliced beef and onions simmered in a sweet and savoury sauce that comes together in minutes. It’s beyond easy to make and is the perfect busy weeknight meal or meal prep!

Ingredients

For the Sauce
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tbsp Hondashi
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp mirin
  • 1 tbsp sugar
For Everything Else
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 small onion sliced
  • 1 lb thinly sliced beef
  • 4 servings cooked rice to serve

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl or measuring cup, stir together 1 cup of water with the hondashi, soy sauce, mirin, and sugar. Set aside.
  2. In a skillet over medium-high heat, add the oil and sliced onion. Saute until the onions have softened, about 3 minutes.
  3. Add the beef to the skillet and saute until 70% to 80% cooked through.
  4. To the skillet, add the liquid to the skillet and lower the heat.
  5. Simmer until the liquid has cooked down, about 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season with salt if needed.
