Homemade Apple Butter consists of a variety of peeled and diced apples, apple cider, spices, and brown sugar that are baked in the oven on low heat for 3 hours until they are a deep golden brown color. This apple butter is great on toast, biscuits, or smear on pancakes.

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds apples peeled and chopped
  • 2 cups apple cider
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Dash of ground cloves and nutmeg

Instructions

    Cup of Yum
  1. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Combine the apples, apple cider, brown sugar and ½ teaspoon salt in a large French oven over medium heat. Bring to a simmer (partially covering) and cook until the apples are soft, about 20 minutes.
  3. Remove from the heat and stir in the lemon juice, cinnamon, vanilla, cloves and nutmeg. Puree the mixture using an immersion blender.
  4. Once pureed, bake uncovered, stirring every 30 minutes, until thickened and deep amber (about 3 hours). Remove from the oven and let the apple butter cool completely at room temperature. Then transfer to airtight containers and refrigerate up to 5 days.

Notes

  • *Nutritional calculations are estimated and may vary depending on serving size and ingredients.
  • Yield - This recipe yields about 2 cups.
  • Apples - Any apples you have on hand will work.
  • Storage - Store the apple butter in glass mason jars.
  • Freeze - You can freeze leftover apple butter for up to 3 months. I suggest freezing in ice cub trays, then transferring to a freezer safe bag for easy individual servings.
