Homemade Breadsticks
These Homemade Breadsticks are soft with a slightly chewy texture, made from a yeast dough enriched with olive oil, sugar, and salt. After rising, the dough is divided, shaped into ropes, and baked to a golden finish. A buttery topping optionally seasoned with garlic powder, salt, Parmesan cheese, and Italian seasoning adds a flavorful crust. They can be enjoyed fresh or alongside meals as a bread accompaniment.
Ingredients
Breadstick Dough
- 1 cup water 100 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit, warm
- 1 tablespoon instant dry yeast
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
For Topping
- 2 tablespoons butter melted, salted
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon Parmesan Cheese optional, grated
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning optional
Instructions
- In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the warm water, yeast, sugar, salt, and olive oil. Stir briefly to combine.
- Add 2 cups of flour to the bowl. Using a dough hook attachment, start the mixer on low speed until the flour begins to incorporate. Increase to medium speed and slowly add the remaining ½ cup of flour. Continue mixing, adding more flour as needed, until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl and is smooth and elastic. The dough should be soft and slightly sticky but not adhere to your hands.
- Transfer the dough to a lightly greased mixing bowl. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let rise in a warm place for 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.
- Lightly grease a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper. Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal portions. Roll each portion into a rope 9–10 inches long and place them evenly spaced on the prepared baking sheet. Cover loosely with the towel and let rise for 20 minutes while preheating the oven.
- Preheat the oven to 400°F. Bake the breadsticks for 16–18 minutes, or until golden brown on top.
- While the breadsticks are baking, whisk together the melted butter, salt, and garlic powder in a small bowl. Brush the mixture over the breadsticks immediately after they come out of the oven. If desired, sprinkle with Parmesan cheese or Italian seasoning while the butter is still warm for additional flavor.
Notes
- If you don’t have a stand mixer, mix and knead the dough by hand on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- When using active dry yeast instead of instant yeast, keep the amount the same but add 10 minutes to each rising period.
- To speed up the rising, place the dough in a 100°F oven; this halves the proofing time, allowing fresh breadsticks in about 50 minutes. Remove the dough before preheating for baking.
