Homemade Cream Cheese Frosting

Homemade Cream Cheese Frosting features creamy, smooth frosting made by beating softened cream cheese and butter together, then incorporating powdered sugar and vanilla extract. The result is a spreadable, slightly tangy frosting ideal for topping cupcakes or layer cakes. For a stiffer consistency suitable for piping, chilling or adding cornstarch can be used.

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces cream cheese softened
  • 1/2 cup butter softened, salted
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  1. Beat the cream cheese and butter together until smooth using a hand mixer or a stand mixer.
  2. Add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract and beat again until creamy and smooth.

Notes

  • For stiffer frosting suitable for piping, refrigerate 15-30 minutes or add 1 tablespoon cornstarch.
  • Refrigerate in an airtight container for 2-3 days; let come to room temperature before use.
  • Freeze up to 3 months; thaw overnight in fridge and re-beat before applying.
  • This recipe makes about 3 cups, enough for 12 cupcakes or a 2-layer cake.
