Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (120 milliliters) soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup (120 milliliters) mirin
  • 1/2 cup (120 milliliters) sake
  • 1/4 cup (50 grams) granulated sugar
Optional:
  • 1/2 small onion peeled and roughly chopped
  • 2 inches (5 centimeters) fresh ginger peeled, thinly sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves peeled and crushed

Instructions

    Cup of Yum
  1. In a small saucepan, whisk together the soy sauce, mirin, sake, and granulated sugar.
  2. Add the onion, ginger, and garlic if using.
  3. Place the saucepan over medium high heat to bring to a boil.
  4. Once boiling, reduce the heat to a simmer and cook, whisking occasionally, for 8 minutes. The sugar should be completely dissolved.
  5. If desired, continue to cook for a few more minutes to reduce the sauce and thicken slightly.
