Ingredients

  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tbs butter
  • 1 packet instant grits
  • 3 tbs shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

    Cup of Yum
  1. In a microwave or in a sauce pan, heat milk to a slight simmer. Add the butter while heating so that the butter melts. This will take about a minute in the microwave and 2 minutes on the stovetop.
  2. Add the instant grits packet and stir well. Allow to sit for 2 minutes and stir again. The mixture will thicken as it sits.
  3. Once the grits have thickened to the desired amount, add the shredded cheddar cheese.
  4. Add salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot.

Notes

  • PRO TIP: Add a dash of garlic powder for more flavor
  • PRO TIP 2: Always add your favorite breakfast ingredient to your grits bowl!
  • SUBSTITUTIONS:
  • Grits - Of course you can substitute coarsely ground grits, 5 Minute Grits or any other kind of grits, but then it will be different directions!
  • Milk - you can substitute any milk substitute, but it will taste different. We recommend whole milk, but any percentage works. Evaporated milk mixed half and half with water works well too.
  • Butter - Margarine or butter substitute.
  • Cheese - Feel free to leave this out or use a cheese substitute.
  • Heat the liquid well with the butter in it so that the butter has a chance to really melt well.
  • Mix and let stand for a few minutes to allow the grits time to absorb the liquid.
  • Add salt and pepper after tasting, sometimes the packet grits are a bit salty on their own.
  • Always add that cheese for flavor!
  • A single serving is one packet, but I find that it takes two packets to make an amount that comes close to filling me up.
