How to Microwave a Sweet Potato

This method shows how to cook a sweet potato quickly in the microwave until tender. The sweet potato is pierced and microwaved until soft, then topped with butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, and pepper for a warm, sweet-spiced side or snack.

Ingredients

  • 1 sweet potato
Toppings:
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Wash the sweet potato thoroughly, pat dry, and pierce 3-4 times with a fork.
  2. Place on a microwave-safe plate and microwave for 5 minutes. If the potato isn’t fork-tender after 5 minutes, continue microwaving in 1-minute increments until ready.
  3. Slice potato in half lengthwise, season with salt, pepper, a sprinkle of brown sugar, and top with 1 tablespoon of butter.
  4. Sprinkle with ground cinnamon and serve.
