Hungarian Chicken Paprikash Recipe

Skillet Hungarian Chicken Paprikash is an easy weeknight meal with a creamy, spicy sauce and tender chicken served over noodles.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper coarse ground
  • 1 pound chicken thighs , boneless and skinless, trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 4 tablespoons butter unsalted
  • 1 yellow onion , thinly sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper , thinly sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic , minced
  • 3 tablespoons sweet paprika Hungarian
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper powder
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1/4 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/3 cup sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar
  • 3 cups egg noodles , to serve (you can use elbow macaroni or spiral fusilli)

Instructions

  1. Season chicken with salt and pepper.
  2. Add butter to large skillet over high heat.
  3. Cook chicken for 4-5 minutes each side.
  4. Remove chicken and set aside, and reduce heat on skillet to medium.
  5. Add onion and bell pepper and cook for 5-6 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
  7. Add paprika, cayenne, and flour to skillet and stir well.
  8. Add in chicken broth and sugar, then cook for 3-4 minutes until thickened.
  9. Reduce heat to medium low.
  10. Add chicken back in, cover, and cook for 15 minutes.
  11. Add in sour cream and vinegar and stir until well combined.
  12. Serve over cooked egg noodles.
