Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter cold and cut into small cubes
  • ¾ cup whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter for brushing on top

Instructions

    Cup of Yum
  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or grease it lightly.
  2. Make the dough: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
  3. Cut in the butter: Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry cutter, fork, or your fingers to work the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized pieces of butter.
  4. Add the milk: Pour in the milk and stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix. The dough will be slightly sticky.
  5. Shape the biscuits: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times to bring it together. Pat the dough into a rectangle about 1-inch thick. Use a round biscuit cutter or a drinking glass to cut out biscuits. Press straight down without twisting to ensure the biscuits rise properly.
  6. Bake: Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet, making sure they are touching each other for soft sides. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.
  7. Brush with butter: Remove the biscuits from the oven and immediately brush the tops with melted butter for an extra rich flavor.
  8. Serve: Let the biscuits cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them with butter, honey, or gravy for a true comfort food experience.

Notes

  • For extra flaky biscuits, be sure to use cold butter and work quickly so it doesn’t melt before baking.
  • If you don’t have a biscuit cutter, you can use a sharp knife or a glass to cut out the biscuits.
  • You can make these biscuits ahead of time and store them in an airtight container for 2-3 days. To reheat, pop them in the oven for 5-7 minutes at 350°F (175°C).
  • For a slightly sweeter biscuit, add an additional tablespoon of sugar.
