Matcha Latte
The Matcha Latte blends finely sifted ceremonial matcha green tea powder with hot water to dissolve the tea, then combines it with warmed honey-sweetened coconut milk, whisked to create a light froth. This results in a smooth, creamy drink with the subtly grassy bitterness characteristic of matcha. The method emphasizes whisking with a bamboo chasen for proper blending and froth.
Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon matcha green tea powder I prefer ceremonial, pure
- 1 tablespoon water just under boiling, hot
- 1/4 cup water just under boiling, hot
- 2 teaspoons honey
- 1/2 cup coconut milk light; or almond milk, oat milk, cow's milk
Instructions
- Sift the matcha powder into the bottom of a wide mug.
- Pour in the 1 tablespoon of hot water. Using your chasen, whisk vigorously until all of the matcha powder has dissolved.
- Next, pour in the remaining 1/4 cup of hot water and whisk again until dissolved.
- Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, set over medium-low heat, combine the honey and milk. Heat until very warm. Whisk vigorously to create a bit of froth at the top. Pour the warmed milk into the mug and whisk one last more.
Notes
- Choose ceremonial grade matcha for best flavor and smooth texture.
- Use a bamboo whisk (chasen) to dissolve powder thoroughly and create froth.
- Milk frother may be used as an alternative to manual whisking.
- Adjust milk type to preference—coconut milk, almond, oat, or cow’s milk all work.
