Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 yellow onion diced, large
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 pound ground beef lean
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • basil chopped (for garnish, optional, fresh leaves

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
  3. Increase heat to medium-high, add ground beef, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes. Cook until beef is browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.
  4. Stir in Italian seasoning, crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and sugar. Add water and bring to a simmer.
  5. Reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer, partially covered, for 45 minutes to an hour, stirring occasionally.
  6. Serve hot over your favorite cooked pasta and garnish with fresh basil, if desired.
