Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 8 ounces sharp cheddar cheese grated
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper

  1. Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Whisk in the flour until smooth and cook for about 1 minute until it starts to turn golden.
  3. Gradually add the milk, whisking continuously, and bring the mixture to a simmer. Cook until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes.
  4. Reduce heat to low and stir in the grated cheese, salt, and cayenne pepper. Continue stirring until the cheese is completely melted and the sauce is smooth.
