Ingredients

  • 1 sweet onion large
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg large
  • Non-stick cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Cut the top and root end off the onion, peel, and slice into 1/2-inch thick petals.
  3. In a bowl, combine flour, smoked paprika, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk and egg until smooth.
  5. Dip onion petals into the buttermilk mixture, then dredge in the flour mixture to coat.
  6. Arrange coated onion petals on the prepared baking sheet and spray lightly with non-stick cooking spray.
  7. Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown and crispy, flipping halfway through.
