Ingredients

  • 3 large eggs
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1/3 cup (80 milliliters) milk
  • 1/3 cup (80 milliliters) heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup (60 milliliters) fresh orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon (15 grams) unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 8 lices thick (at least 1/2 inch, 1.25 centimeters) bread
Optional Toppings:
  • Whipped Cream
  • powdered sugar
  • butter
  • Orange slices
  • maple syrup
  • fresh mint

Instructions

    Cup of Yum
  1. In a large, wide bowl, whisk together the eggs, orange zest, milk, cream, orange juice, vanilla extract, and salt.
  2. In a large skillet, melt the butter and vegetable oil over medium-low heat.
  3. Once the butter is melted and the pan is hot, soak one slice of bread in the egg and milk mixture for about 30 seconds per side.
  4. Cook until golden, about 2 minutes per side. Adjust the heat between medium and low to create a golden color and thoroughly heated bread without burning.
  5. Repeat with remaining slices of bread, adding additional butter and vegetable oil to the pan as needed.
  6. Serve immediately with whipped cream, powdered sugar, butter, orange slices, and/or maple syrup and other desired toppings.
