Oven-Baked Pork Belly "Bacon" Strips

This recipe for Oven-Bake Pork Belly "bacon" strips emulates the flavor and texture of crispy bacon, without any smoking or curing (nitrates).

Ingredients

Seasoning: (makes more than you will need)
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • pinch of habanero powder optional, if you like it with a little heat
  • liquid smoke optional
Main:
  • ½ lb pork belly thinly sliced

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F/204°C.
  2. Line a large baking sheet (13" by 18") with parchment paper.
  3. Mix the seasoning together in a small bowl.
  4. Arrange the pork belly slices onto the tray.
  5. Sprinkle the seasoning on top of each pork belly slice.
  6. Bake the pork belly slices in the oven at 400°F/204°C for 10 minutes.
  7. Remove from oven, flip the pork belly slices and sprinkle with seasonings again.
  8. Return the pork belly to the oven and bake for another 10-15 minutes, or to your desired crispness.
  9. Remove from oven and transfer to a container or plate lined with paper towel.
  10. Leave to cool. As the bacon cools, it will crisp up further.
  11. Use in sandwiches, crumbled up in salads, or enjoy as a snack.

Notes

  • If using liquid smoke, lightly brush the pork slices with liquid smoke before adding the seasonings.
