Peppermint Hot Chocolate
This peppermint hot chocolate recipe is rich homemade hot cocoa with a hint of mint flavor. Add some whipped cream, crushed candy canes and marshmallows for the ultimate holiday drink!

Ingredients
- 4 cups whole milk
- 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder sifted
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- ¾ cup semisweet chocolate chips
- ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon peppermint extract
- garnishes such as marshmallows, whipped cream and crushed candy canes
Instructions
- Place the milk, cocoa powder and granulated sugar in a pot.
- Cook over medium low heat for about 4-5 minutes, whisking occasionally, until the mixture is warm and the cocoa and sugar are thoroughly incorporated. You want the milk to be at a light simmer, but do not bring it to a boil.
- Add the chocolate and cook for another 3-4 minutes, whisking continuously.
- After the chocolate has fully melted into the milk, add the vanilla extract and peppermint extract. Cook for 1 minute.
- Serve the hot chocolate in mugs topped with garnishes as desired.

Notes
- Peppermint extract is very strong, and a little goes a long way. I find that 1/4 teaspoon adds plenty of mint flavor without being overpowering, but if you’re a huge mint fan, you can add another drop or two.
- It’s very important to make sure the mixture does not boil, as this could cause curdling or separation.
