Pork Spareribs Macao-style Asado

Chinese-style Pork Asado are easy to make and sure to be a family favorite. With meaty bones and a sweet and savory sauce, this Asian pork dish is delicious with steamed rice.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 2 pounds pork spare ribs, cut into 1 ½-inch pieces
  • 4 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
  • 1 cup water
  • ½ cup soy sauce
  • 4 pieces star anise
  • 2 bay leaves
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a wide pan over medium heat, heat oil. Add pork and cook, turning as needed, until lightly browned.
  2. Add garlic and cook for about 30 seconds or until aromatic.
  3. Add water and soy sauce. Bring to a boil, skimming any scum that floats on top.
  4. Add star anise and bay leaves.
  5. Lower heat, cover, and continue to cook until meat is tender.
  6. Add brown sugar and stir until dissolved. Continue to simmer until sauce is reduced.
  7. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot.

Notes

  • Have the butcher cut through the bones to make slicing the spare ribs into  pieces easier.
