Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups cake flour
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder unsweetened
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter unsalted, softened
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 large egg
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 ounce red food coloring
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups cream cheese frosting (click for recipe)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and spray a 9x13 baking pan with baking spray.
  2. Sift the flour, cocoa powder, and baking soda into a large bowl and add the salt to it.
  3. In a stand mixer whisk together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, then add in the eggs one at a time.
  4. Whisk in the sour cream, milk, red food coloring and vanilla then add in the flour until just combined with no dry streaks.
  5. Pour into baking pan, spread evenly and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Let cool completely before frosting.

Notes

  • Cream Cheese Frosting: In a stand mixer, beat 8 ounces of softened cream cheese, 1/4 cup of softened unsalted butter, 2 tablespoons of sour cream, and 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract until the mixture is light and fluffy. Add 4 cups of powdered sugar, one cup at a time, and continue beating until the frosting is smooth and fully incorporated.
