Roasted Turnips
Roasted Turnips are cut into chunks, tossed with olive oil, nutmeg, salt, and pepper, then baked until golden and tender. The roasting process brings out turnips’ natural nuttiness and soft texture, complemented optionally by fresh thyme or rosemary for subtle herbal notes.
Ingredients
- 2 lb turnips 900g
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
To serve (optional)
- thyme sprigs
- rosemary sprigs
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F/200°C.
- Peel the turnips and cut into similarly sized chunks (about 1 inch).
- Toss the turnip chunks in the oil and nutmeg, then spread out in a single layer on baking sheets. Season with the salt and pepper.
- Place the baking sheet in the oven and roast the turnips for about 30 minutes until soft and golden, flipping halfway through. The time will depend on the size of your turnip pieces, so check and adjust the cooking time accordingly. Serve warm.
- If desired, serve topped with thyme.
Notes
- Peel regular-sized turnips before roasting to remove any bitterness and impurities on the skin.
- Evenly cut pieces ensure uniform roasting and tenderness throughout.
- Nutmeg adds a subtle warmth that complements the turnip’s earthy flavor.
- Roasting turns raw turnip’s sharpness into a milder, nuttier taste.
- Fresh thyme or rosemary sprigs can be added for extra aroma and flavor.
