Rum old fashioned

This twist on the classic has all the familiar characteristics, but with some lovely spice and caramel flavors in the mix. Wonderfully sippable.

Ingredients

  • ¼ fl oz demerara syrup or a little more, to taste
  • 2 dashes angostura bitters
  • 2 dashes orange bitters
  • 2 fl oz dark rum I used Planteray original dark, but as you have/prefer
  • 1 trip orange peel
  • 1 maraschino cherry (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

    Cup of Yum
  1. Place the demerara syrup, angostura and orange bitters in a glass, mixing jug or cocktail shaker along with the rum and some pieces of ice. Stir well to cool the mixture and dilute gently.
  2. Prepare an old fashioned (rocks) glass with a large cube or ball of ice and strain the rum mixture over the top. Twist the piece of orange peel over the glass to let a little of the oils go into the drink, then rub it gently around the edge of the glass before adding on top.
  3. Garnish with a maraschino cherry on a cocktail stick, if you like, and serve.

Notes

  • Demerara sugar is made with equal parts demerara sugar and water, by volume. Demerara sugar is a coarse brown sugar that is sometimes called turbinado sugar in the US.
