Russian Dressing Recipe
Russian Dressing combines mayonnaise, ketchup, horseradish, grated onion, Worcestershire sauce, cornichons, smoked paprika, and hot sauce to create a creamy, tangy, and slightly spicy condiment. The grated sweet onion adds a fragrant sharpness balanced by the cornichons' bite. Chilling the dressing enhances the flavors, making it a flexible sauce for salads, sandwiches, or dips.
Ingredients
- 1 cup mayonnaise (such as Hellmann's or Duke's)
- 1/3 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon horseradish or additional, to taste, refrigerated, prepared
- 2 tablespoons onion sweet Vidalia or yellow, see note, grated
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons cornichon finely minced
- 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
- hot sauce to taste, a few dashes
Instructions
- Whisk together all ingredients in a bowl. Cover and refrigerate for at least an hour for the flavors to develop. (For the best flavor, make it the day before you plan to use it.) If you like your Russian dressing spicier, season to taste with additional horseradish and hot sauce.
- Store, tightly-covered in the refrigerator for up to a week.
Notes
- Grate the onion using the large holes on a box grater for easy preparation and to release fresh onion flavor.
- Sweet onions like Vidalia give a milder and sweeter taste compared to yellow onions, which will make the dressing tangier.
