Simple Pizza Sauce Recipe

This easy homemade pizza sauce recipe begins with whole tomatoes, simmered with fresh basil, garlic, and onions to give you the perfect base for your next homemade pizza. Authentic Italian flavor from the Old Country!

Ingredients

  • 28 oz can whole tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 cup onion small dice
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh basil 1 teaspoon if using dried
  • 1 tbsp fresh oregano 1 teaspoon if using dried
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes optional
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper

Instructions

  1. Pour tomatoes in large bowl and crush into small pieces with hands.
  2. Preheat large skillet to medium heat, add olive oil and butter. Add onions and cook 3-5 minutes until translucent.
  3. Add garlic and cook about 30 seconds.
  4. Add tomatoes, basil, oregano, red pepper flakes, sugar, salt and pepper.
  5. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Notes

  • Freezer Instructions: Let sauce cool to room temperature. Pour into zip lock freezer bags (portion sauce enough for 1 pizza in each bag). Label and lay flat in freezer. To thaw, place in fridge over night.
