Sloppy Joe Casserole

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds lean ground beef , 85/15
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 large yellow onion , chopped
  • 1 large green bell pepper , chopped
  • 1 clove garlic , minced
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 8 ounces tomato sauce
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon course ground black pepper
  • 12 slices cheese
  • 1 can French bread dough (Pillsbury or store brand)
  • 1 large egg , beaten
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 tablespoon white sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Add the ground beef to a large skillet on medium-high heat and brown until cooked through, about 5-6 minutes.
  3. Drain the fat, lower heat to medium and add the butter, onions and bell pepper to the pan.
  4. Cook vegetables with the beef until onions and green bell peppers are translucent, about 6-8 minutes.
  5. Add the garlic, mustard, tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, salt, black pepper to the pan and cook for 3-5 minutes until slightly thickened.
  6. Add the ground beef mixture into a 9x13 baking dish.
  7. Top with sliced cheese evenly over the beef mixture.
  8. Unroll the French bread dough over the cheese slices
  9. Mix the egg well with water then brush the top of the dough with the egg mixture and top with sesame seeds.
  10. Bake for 25-30 minutes.
